First Base Acts 6:7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith. (ESV)
Second Base After the apostles have the church choose 7 men of good reputation to administer the affairs of the church, they (the apostles) are able to devote 100% of their time to prayer, preaching, and teaching the word. As a result the number of people and religious leaders who come to faith are greatly increased. (Source: The Panorama Bible)
Third Base Besides Major League Baseball, many groups such as the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Baseball Almanac, Baseball Reference, and the Society For American Baseball Reference are dedicated to preserving baseball history.
Home Plate The book of Acts outlines the activities of the key apostles, primarily Peter and Paul, and other prominent believers in the first century. Pastor Charles Swindoll writes, “The book of Acts provides us with a valuable account of early church growth as it moved from the epicenter (Jerusalem) to the outer edges of the Roman Empire.” Acts is the only book dedicated to the history of the church following the ascension of Christ. So why is the significant to us today?
First we see how the message of Christ crucified and his resurrection becomes a journey that goes from the Jews and is now given to the Gentiles as well. We find the witnesses will now be dispersed from Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8). We learn the stories of the actions of Luke, Theopholus, the Apostle Pete and Paul, Philip, the Evangelist, Barnabas, Son of Encouragement, Stephen, the Martyr, Aquila and Priscilla, Ananias and Sapphira, Apollos, Timothy, The Bereans, the Jewish Rulers, and the Roman rulers. We read about their success in sharing the gospel and about the struggles and hardships they faced. The knowledge of our Christian Heritage provides encouragement, wisdom, and comfort for daily living. We learn how the gospel was presented boldly to others and this serves as a guide for us. Pastor Swindoll continues in his summary of Acts by saying “The apostles portrayed in Acts shine with evangelistic zeal, showing a striking transition from the often misguided disciples of the Gospels.” Historians of our national pastime have recorded the struggles of the early players who had to deal with riotous fans who would come out of the stands to fight both umpires and players when their team wasn’t winning. It records how baseball players played the game before gloves were introduced. The legacy left by the Acts of the Apostles and the early Christians who died as martyrs must move us to action.
Final Out Father, let the words and actions of the Acts of the Apostles and the early Christians motive us to action this day. For we are encouraged to invest in the life of someone else who needs the Lord in their life. Telling the your story, also involves telling our story for it is more important than ever in this day and time. Amen
